Interview & Studio Tour

Who are you and what is your relationship with music?

My name is Nicolas Huicq also known as Fook Yue.

I'm a techno artist that performs live music. I'm from Lille, North of France.

I have already made releases (EP and VA) on Nechto, Space Textures, KR Records, Postdynamic, Sunora Recordings…

I'm also part of a collective of artists called Interphase Collectif.

I've been doing techno for five years, I started my apprenticeship in different rock bands as a bassist and keyboardist but my passion for electronic music took over the rest.

I have a job besides music at the moment, but the real goal is to expand the project to do just that.

Which piece of equipment in your studio is essential to your production process?

I really like working with my Roland TR-8 and its very particular and pure sound.

Being able to control the entire setup with the Arturia Beatstep Pro is also a real pleasure.

What is the least expensive piece of gear that gave you the most results?

I use my Proco Rat pedal a lot, which allows me to have a grain on most of my instruments, whether on the TB3 or the TR8, but also on pads and atmospheres.

Walk us through your process for creating and producing music.

I always start with ambient sounds which will serve as the basis for the rest.

Then I add complex drums, big subs and some groove details.

From there I start to work on the composition and arrangements of the mix.

I use Ableton Live to record all the different channels.

What is a production technique that you always come back to?

I spend a lot of time analyzing other musicians tracks to be able to evolve my style, while keeping my obsession for hypnotic techno.

How would you describe your style?

Fook Yue is an atmospheric/deep techno/ambient techno project.

What is a big challenge you have as an artist?

I would like to release even more records, play a lot more, and develop my style. I created with two friends (23.4 and Solo Kin) a collective called "Interphase" which aims to export our music and our influence, through parties and sessions filmed in atypical places. Here are the projects of the moment.

Has building a hardware setup changed your perspective on music or life in general?

My setup is perfect for doing what I want, both atmospheres and very punchy drums while respecting the codes of my genre. It sometimes gives me the impression of being in a music group where everyone has their role.

One tip on how to spark creativity?

The act of first working on atmospheres and textures allows me to leave in a lot of inspirations and explorations, while keeping my musical style and my references.

A book, movie, article, or album that has inspired you?

A club night, in reality just a memory. I went to the Intercell party for the ADE 2018 in Amsterdam to listen to Kangding Ray, Lucy, Efdemin... Best night of my life, a major inspiration for my music, and an eternal memory.

Anything else you'd like to say?

First of all thank you for the opportunity to be able to show my workspace and my method, it's a great experience.

Finding your aesthetic using machines is sometimes not so easy, and sharing it is a pleasure. Thanks !
